European Union Commissioner for Digital Economy & Society (previously Digital Agenda), Ms Mariya Gabriel, (responsible for the EU’s media, information issues, telecoms, IT, digital development) reconnecting with Mobilium Global chief executive Ralph Simon backstage at the MWC 2019 – ahead of their respective keynote sessions.
Mariya said: “Today only 44% of Europeans have basic digital skills, 90% of jobs after 2020 would require basic digital skills & there’s a huge need to focus on digital skills acquisition by young people, by today’s active population & by vulnerable groups”. “The European Commission can facilitate the sharing of good practices & supports the development of creative industries & of a successful European media and content industry”. But she warned, Europe is not at the centre of a technological revolution, & is still lagging behind in investments & in defining the model it will follow in digitisation beyond 2020.
